Cable Ferry James Aptegon

The cable ferry C.F. James Aptegon was placed back in service in July 2011 after being stretched, widened, refurbished and re-engined. The ferry is owned by Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation (MIT). International Maritime Consultants in North Vancouver BC were the project engineers and project managers.

The John Deere 6068HF285, 200 hp power unit, powers the hydraulic system. Its main function is to power the ferry's cable drum/wheel that pulls the ferry across the lake, as well as the vehicle loading ramp. Frontier also supplied a Frontier KS1200 generator set that runs all the electrics on the boat.

This was supplied by Frontier's Winnipeg branch though HyPower Systems. The unit drives a Sauer Danfoss series 90 variable volume Hydrostatic Drive.

Reimer International of Didsbury AB manufactures the Mobile Volumentric Concrete Mixer. Think of it as a high-production batch plant on wheels. All of the components — stone, sand, cement, and water — load into separate compartments on a truck-mounted unit. These components are precisely metered and mixed into fresh concrete in a special auger as the Mobile Mixer unit is being discharged. A wireless remote control allows a single operator to make adjustments to the mix and discharge rate. This design makes it adaptable for many different work environments...

Travers Food Service support unit
Travers Food Service Ltd. (Division of Aramark Canada Ltd.) provides camp services for oilfield and other crews working in remote locations. The company will design, build and set up the camps for their customers. As well, they provide catering, maintenance, site clean-up and other services. They are a well-established firm with a wide range of specialty and standard camp services.

This unit, one of four supplied to Travers this year, is known as a “support unit”. It has two primary functions. The first is to provide reliable electrical power for the camp and the second is to house the propane tanks that supply fuel for the kitchen.

Camp support unit

The generator sets are 100 kWe John Deere powered Stamford units. The engines are “tier 3” model 4045HF285s with a rating of 158 hp (118 kWm) at 1800 rpm. The generators are UCI274Ds with a prime power rating of 100 kWe. Only one set operates “on line” at any time. The other unit is available as a standby set should the need arise. The load transfer is manual, by means of a three-pole, double throw transfer switch. Electrical distribution includes Crouse Hinds pin and sleeve connectors and twist-lock outlets. A 3000 litre fuel tank (660 imperial gallon) provides more than seven days of fuel for the generator sets.

The generator sets are completely equipped to cope with the adverse weather conditions found in winter in northern Canada. Each unit is equipped with a diesel fired coolant heater and thermostatically controlled radiator shutters.

Two 1000-gallon propane tanks provide cooking fuel for the kitchens.

Travers Food Service aims to provide their clients with top quality camp services. We are pleased to have been selected as their power provider.
