Features & Benefits

  • Directed top liner cooling reduces upper liner temperature by as much as 100° F (56° C) providing improved durability and reliability of upper cylinder components.
  • Electronic control for unmatched performance. Engine Control Unit (ECU) is remote mounted.
  • Water cooled manifold and turbocharger protect vessel and personnel from extreme temperatures.
  • Replaceable wet liners, 45-degree connecting rod/cap joint and replaceable valve seats makes these diesels rebuildable within the hull.
  • Either-side dipstick and oil fill and multiple oil filter locations provide installation convenience and make daily maintenance fast and easy.
  • A gear auxiliary drive (60 hp intermittent) provides reliable power for wash-down pumps and hydraulic pumps. Two drive locations available.
  • Poly-vee belt drive provides increased capacity and flexibility with reduced maintenance. Manual or automatic tensioners available.
  • Belt guard designed for simple belt inspection and easy belt replacement.

Engine Description
The industrial POWERTECH 6081AF001 is the base engine for the POWERTECH 6081AFM01 marine engine. The marine engine incorporates heavy-duty components on the base engine to ensure excellent reliability at sea. The engine is equipped with ceramic fiber reinforced pistons for added strength and heavy-duty copper nickel bonded engine bearings. Other heavy-duty parts incorporated into the base engine include a cast iron water pump cover, composite material valve cover, large capacity spin-on fuel filter, cast aluminum oil pan, alternators up to 140 amps, gear driven seawater pump, and a single stage, high capacity air cleaner. The engine comes standard with directed top-liner-cooled replaceable wet liners that extend the life of the engine. These are more economical to service at overhaul than competitive parent metal block engines that require re-sleeving and machining.

The POWERTECH 6081AFM engine incorporates improved marine hardware. The heat exchanger and top tank unit is a single unit made of copper and brass, which resists corrosion from seawater. It incorporates a CuNi heat exchanger core and two sacrificial zinc anode plugs. The keel-cooled version will utilize the same assembly, less the core and anodes. Coolant connections on the keel-cooled engines are horizontal, which simplifies connections to the keel cooler.

The exhaust manifold gives the engine better exhaust flow and retains more thermal energy to the turbocharger resulting in better fuel economy and more torque.

Other marine features include a low mount alternator with manual tension adjustment, alternator choices up to 140 amps, eavy-duty wire belt guard, gear-driven seawater pump, and several choices of auxiliary drives.

The POWERTECH 6081AFM incorporates an electronically-controlled injection pump. It is equipped at the factory with a 20-foot wiring harness and remote mounted electronic control unit (ECU). Extensions are available for the wiring harness from the engine to the main panel and from the main panel to the flybridge panel.

The ECU and throttle potentiometer can be remote mounted up to 20 feet away on a bulkhead or in an access panel free from engine heat and vibration. The throttle potentiometer can be connected to a mechanical control cable or other servo device for actuation. There are two connections for throttle potentiometers to allow engine control from separate stations. The ECU wiring harness incorporates connections for a diagnostic scan tool and two instrument panels.

There are two instrument panels available - a main panel and a flybridge panel. Both panels incorporate Computer Area Network (CAN) data link through an SAE J1939 harness that communicates vital engine diagnostic and performance data to a multi-display module on the main panel. The module will display performance data, hours, pre-alarm codes, and fault codes. If the engine is operated beyond set operating conditions, such as with low oil pressure or high water temperature, the engine will automatically derate to a safe power level until the fault conditions indicated in the module are in acceptable range. This feature protects the engine without shutting it off and forewarns the operator of the need to inspect the engine.
