Diesel engines are a potential source of ignition when used in areas where combustible gas, vapours or dusts may exist. Chalwyn are leading manufacturers of safety products for diesel engines which are required to operate either in hazardous areas where combustible gas, vapours or dust may exist, or in situations demanding special safety precautions.

The Chalwyn diesel engine safety product range includes automatic overspeed air and fuel shut down valves, air pressure, oil pressure, manual and electrically operated air intake shut down valves, flameproof alternators, exhaust spark arrestors and complete engine monitoring and automatic shut down systems.

Engine air intake positive shut off valves
If flammable gas or vapour is drawn into the intake of a diesel engine it acts as an additional ungoverned fuel supply. This may result in uncontrolled engine overspeed, followed by dangerous mechanical failure or flash back through the air intake, and the ignition of the surrounding gas or vapour cloud.

Once a flammable mixture is being drawn into the engine intake it may not be possible to stop the engine by closing down the fuel supply. An air intake valve guaraantees a rapid and safe engine shut down.

PVX series
Air pressure to open

Sprung closed air intake shut down (shut off) valves which can be held open by the application of air pressure. Slim, light weight, 3", 5" and 8" bore butterfly valves which are opened by air pressure. These products are designed to be mounted between flanges or can be supplied fitted with hose adaptors selected from a range of 28 size options.

SVX models
Solenoid energized to open

Available in 12V or 24V. Slim, light weight, corrosion resistant construction. Can be flange or hose mounted. May be combined with Chalwyn FSX-200 fuel shut down valve to give simulataneous shut down of intake air and diesel fuel.

- CE239 - hazardous area, energized to open. ATEX approved, externally switched solenoid. Automatic closure on loss of power. 38mm (1-1/2") to 203mm (8")

Manual reset types - Engine air intake positive shut off valves

MVX models
Manual shut down

Slim, light weight, 3", 5" and 8" bore butterfly valves complete with reset lever to latch in the open position and the option of either a valve-mounted stop button or a remote stop button with a cable connection to the valve. These valves may be mounted between flanges or can be supplied fitted with hose adaptors selected from a range of 28 size options.

Suitable for US MMS attended installations, and Canadian remote positive air shut off regulations. Simple operation--instant engine shut down. Corrosion resistant; proven in offshore service. Metal to metal seals--avoids wear association with 'O' ring seals

MPX series
Manual or air pressure shut down

Simple manual latch to open -- air pressure releases valve to close. Manual shut down via valve mounted stop button or via cable from remote shut down control. Suitable for drilling rig ESD air systems / US MMS offshore installations. Push or pull remove shutdown options with choice of cable lengths. Build option available without manual shut down. Air intake diameters from 38mm (1-1/2") - 203mm (8")

Manual start override types - Engine air intake positive shut off valves

SVX Series
Manual or de-energize solenoid to shut down

Slim, light weight, 3" and 5" bore, 12 volt and 24 volt butterfly valves. Available as either EExe or safe area equipment. Complete with cable and lever start override to hold the valve open prior to powering the solenoid. Shut down occurs on loss of power to the solenoid or by operation of the manual shut down control. These valves may be mounted between flanges or can be supplied fitted with hose adaptors selected from a range of 26 size options.

- CE230 - hazardous area, manual override, energized to latch open models. ATEX approved. Two wire solenoid connection. Sprung closed on loss of power. Manual emergency stop. 38mm (1-1/2") - 152mm (6")

HVX series
Manual or loss of oil (or air) pressure to shut down

Slim, light weight, 3" and 5" bore butterfly valves with cable and lever start override to enable the valve to be held open prior to supply of oil (or air) pressure. Shut down occurs on loss of oil (or air) pressure or by operation of the manual shut down control. These valves may be mounted between flanges or can be supplied fitted with hose adaptors selected from a range of 26 size options.

TMZ series & AMZ series
Automatic overspeed air intake shut down (shut off) valves with shut down on loss of oil pressure combined with manual start override / manual emergency shut down

Fully automatic engine overspeed protection valves with an input port to also give a shut down on loss of an oil (or air) pressure signal. Supplied complete with a cable and lever to enable the valve to be held open prior to the supply of the oil (or air) pressure signal and, when operated in the reverse direction, to enable a manual emergency shut down.

Fuel shutdown valves

FSX and LST series
When used in conjunction with the appropriate Chalwyn D, X or Z intake air valve, the FSX-200 ensures simultaneous shut down of both engine air and fuel supply. Special kits are available to assist in making the required connection between the intake air and fuel shut down valves.

- The LST-200 automatically closes down the engine fuel supply on loss of an oil (or air) pressure signal. Suitable for engine types with fuel supply pipes up to about 10mm (3/8 inch) in diameter.

An exhaust spark arrestor is a key safety requirement for both hazardous areas and lower risk diesdel engine applications such as forestry or agriculture where a stray spark may cause ignition of combustible material.

ASX series
Standard automotive type alternators are a continuous potential source of ignition when operated in hazardous atmospheres where combustible concentrations of gas, vapour or dusts may exist. Chalwyn offers a range of flameproof alternators. Battery excited and self-excited, 12V and 24V, 25A and 50A.

When a diesel engine is operated in a hazardous area or in an application where special precautions are justified, it is often a general requirement that the engine automatically shuts down if its speed, critical temperatures or oil pressure fall outside of predetermined limits. It is widely recognized that the best method to achieve such an emergency automatic shut down is by closure of an engine intake shut down valve. To comply with EN 1834-1:2000 both the engine air intake and diesel fuel supply must be shut down automatically in the event of engine overspeed. It must also be possible to operate the air shut down valve manually.
